Ask yourself the question, “who would you bring to a deserted island and why?”
A couple of days ago, I was confronted with the question and, naturally, i picked the person who I believed would be capable of creating fires and catching fish, a member of boy scouts. The answer to me seemed blatantly obvious, until I began asking my other friends the same question.
Notably, one of my friends said that he would bring an intelligent individual who can repair the craft, be it an airplane, or a ship, so they could escape. His answer opened up the metaphorical box that my mind was stuck in, and made me question what my answer said about me. Why was it that I chose to merely suffer with the circumstances forced upon me rather than using intellectual resources to overcome these circumstances.
Some people even answered with bringing the person they love, but why would they innately select to seal their relationship with death. Would you want your loved one to live happily, even it if were to be without you?
It was such a simple, implausible, and borderline ridiculous question, but a person’s answer revealed so much about his or her values. It made me question whether or not I could actually approach challenges with confidence that I will succeed by excelling above expectations. It is amazing what you can learn about yourself just by letting your mind roam. This also testifies to the accuracy of my belief that no action or conversation is a waste of your time so long as you apply the question “why?” to add greater understanding to the cause.
